Gelsa is a small municipality in Zaragoza province, and like hundreds of Aragonese towns during 1936–37, its council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These locally printed notes, often called "vales" or "moneda de necessitat," were never intended to outlast the war and most didn't. Municipal issues from villages this size were produced in tiny runs and circulated in tight geographic loops, which is precisely why surviving examples are disproportionately scarce relative to the larger Catalan civic issues.
Printing by C.A.M. in Barcelona placed production firmly in Republican-controlled territory, even as the Aragón front was contested throughout 1937.
