Gandía's maritime and land workers' union — the Sindicato Marítimo Terrestre — issued these small-denomination notes during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of fractional coinage. Municipalities, trade unions, and cooperatives across the Valencian region filled the gap with locally printed emergency currency, none of it formally coordinated and most of it only accepted within a tight geographic radius.
Union-issued scrip from port bodies is considerably less common in collections than municipal emergency issues. The Gandía harbour series in particular circulated among a working population under active wartime pressure, and attrition was high.
