1 Peseta - Francisco Franco Ávalos

Spain's aluminium-bronze peseta coinage of this period carries dates that require careful reading. The large date in the exergue is the year of the original die, but the true striking year is punched inside the six-pointed stars flanking it — a Spanish minting convention that makes these pieces routinely miscatalogued. A coin reading "1966" in the exergue may well have been struck as late as 1975, and the star dates are the only reliable guide to actual production year.

Franco died in November 1975, and coinage bearing his effigy continued into the transition period. The 1975 star-dated strikes are the last of the type before Juan Carlos I's accession issues replaced them.
