Forès is a village in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Catalonia with a population that has rarely exceeded a few hundred — which makes the decision to issue municipal emergency currency in 1937 both administratively ambitious and logistically curious. Like hundreds of other Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, Forès issued its own paper fractional currency after the Republican government's decree of June 1937 authorized local bodies to fill the acute shortage of small-denomination coinage, most of which had vanished from circulation through hoarding.
Printed by Imprenta Solé in Tarragona, the note shares its press with dozens of other small-municipality issues from the same province, making the printer a more common variable than the issuer.
