Additional information

The Basque Government issued this coin in 1937 under extraordinary circumstances — the autonomous republic was actively at war, with Nationalist forces closing in on Bilbao. It was one of the few instances in the Spanish Civil War of a regional government asserting monetary authority independently of both the Republic in Madrid and Franco's insurgents. The Basque administration fell to Franco in June 1937, making the window of actual circulation remarkably brief.

Production was contracted to a Belgian mint. Bilbao itself fell on June 19th.
