Esplús is a tiny municipality in the Huesca province of Aragon — its wartime scrip exists because the Spanish Civil War severed reliable coin supply to rural communities almost entirely by 1937. Hundreds of Spanish towns and village councils issued their own emergency paper, and the Consejo Municipal here was no exception, authorizing notes through the Centre d'Administració Municipal's printing operation in Barcelona, which served as a clearinghouse printer for dozens of these small Republican-zone issuers simultaneously.
