Els Omellons is a tiny municipality in the Garrigues comarca of Lleida, Catalonia, with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the 1930s. This note belongs to the emergency fractional currency — known collectively as "moneda local" or "paper moneda" — that erupted across Catalan towns and villages following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936, when metallic coin disappeared from circulation almost overnight through hoarding and requisition.
Turró catalogues over two thousand distinct Catalan local issues from this period. That Els Omellons produced its own rather than relying on a neighboring ayuntamiento reflects just how atomized the emergency monetary response was at the municipal level.
