El Vendrell was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that resorted to printing their own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War, when the hoarding of coins — silver and copper alike — created acute shortages of small change across the Republican zone. This peseta was produced locally by Barnadas, a printer operating in the town itself, which was unusual enough; most comparable municipalities contracted out to Barcelona firms. The engraver credit to Borrull appears on the plate, though little is documented about this individual beyond similar Civil War-era municipal work.
