Opmerkingen

El Provencio is a small municipality in Cuenca province, Castilla-La Mancha, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it resorted to locally issued paper fractional currency during the Civil War after metallic coinage effectively vanished from circulation in 1936. These municipal emergency notes — collectively known as "billetes locales" or "papel moneda de necesidad" — were produced with whatever printing resources were at hand, which accounts for the extreme variation in quality across the series. The Gari Monteys catalogue remains the primary reference for this material, much of which survives only in single-digit quantities.
