Opmerkingen

Donzell d'Urgell is a tiny municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida province, and its decision to issue emergency paper money in 1937 was entirely practical — the Spanish Civil War had caused such a severe shortage of metallic coinage across Republican-held Catalonia that hundreds of local councils, down to the smallest villages, were authorized under Generalitat decree to print their own small-denomination scrip. These notes circulated only within the issuing municipality and were theoretically redeemable once the crisis passed.

Arts Gràfiques Ilerda in Lleida printed for numerous Catalan ayuntaments during this period, which gives notes from this cluster a certain typographic consistency despite their different issuers. Turró catalogued over a thousand such issues, and this is number 913.
