Cuevas del Almanzora is a mining town in Almería province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local council was forced to produce its own fractional currency when Republican Spain's small-change supply collapsed entirely in 1936–37. The Banco de España had been hoarding coins, and silver had largely vanished from circulation. Municipal councils — whatever their political complexion — had little choice but to print.
The Gari Monerris catalogue documents over a thousand such local emissions from the Republican zone, and Almería province is among the better-represented regions. Cuevas examples turn up occasionally but not abundantly.
