Campo de Criptana, a town in La Mancha, issued its own emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War under the authority of its municipal council — a pattern repeated across Republican-held Spain after the Nationalist uprising disrupted the banking system and caused acute small-denomination coinage shortages from mid-1936 onward. These locally produced notes, collectively known as billetes locales or moneda municipal, were legal tender only within the issuing municipality, which created immediate practical problems for anyone traveling between towns.
The Garicano-Moragas catalog reference places this among the documented La Mancha issues, though survival rates for Campo de Criptana municipals are low — small-town runs were typically modest, and most circulated hard before the currency was withdrawn.
