Copons is a tiny municipality in the comarca of Anoia, Catalonia, with a population that rarely exceeded a few hundred during the early twentieth century. Notes like this one were produced during the Spanish Civil War years, when the Republican government's decree of June 1937 authorized Catalan municipalities to issue their own emergency fractional currency — paper money in denominations below one peseta was scarce, and even the peseta itself was hard to come by in small localities.
Turró catalogues hundreds of these municipal emissions, but Copons sits among the rarer issuing bodies simply by virtue of its size. Few were printed; fewer still survived.
