Conquista is a small municipality in the province of Córdoba, Andalusia. Like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone commerce collapsed under a near-total shortage of small change — centimos coins had been hoarded or melted, and the central government was slow to fill the gap. These municipally issued notes, generically called "billetes locales," were produced with whatever printing resources were available locally, which is why the typographic quality varies so sharply from town to town.
The Gari Monerris catalog remains the primary reference for this material; few of these Conquista issues have been systematically tracked for survival rates.
