Chulilla is a small hill town in Valencia province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency paper fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage evaporated from circulation in 1937. These local issues — often called "billetes de necesidad" — were produced under no central oversight, which means quality, serial numbering discipline, and even denominations varied wildly from one town to the next.
The Turró and Gari catalogues together document thousands of such municipal issues; Chulilla's placement in both suggests at least some collector documentation exists, but surviving examples from small Valencian towns of this size remain genuinely difficult to locate.
