Puerto Rico has no monetary authority and issues no official coinage — this piece originates from the private Cataño mint, which has produced a series of Puerto Rico-themed silver rounds marketed as local collectibles rather than legal tender. The "peseta" denomination is a nostalgic reference to the Spanish colonial currency that circulated in Puerto Rico before the 1899 monetary transition following the Spanish-American War, when the island's peso was exchanged at a highly unfavorable rate of 60 U.S. cents on the dollar.
