1 Peseta Castro-Urdiales

Castro-Urdiales, a small fishing port on the Cantabrian coast, was among hundreds of Spanish municipalities that issued their own emergency paper currency in the summer of 1936 after the military uprising disrupted coin supply and froze normal banking activity. These ayuntamiento notes filled a genuine transactional void — markets still needed to function, fishermen needed to be paid, and the Republican zone could not quickly provision every coastal town with official currency.

Municipal issues from the Cantabrian north are notably scarcer than those from larger Catalan or Valencian centers, partly because the region fell to Nationalist forces by mid-1937, cutting circulation short and leaving surviving notes largely unredeemed.
