Castellsarroca is a tiny municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly small Republican-held towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency paper currency after the 1936 breakdown in coin supply — silver and copper had been hoarded or melted almost immediately following the July uprising. The Generalitat de Catalunya nominally oversaw these local emissions but could not adequately supply small denomination coinage, leaving ajuntaments and consells to fill the gap themselves.
The printer, C.A.M., handled a considerable volume of these municipal issues out of Barcelona, which accounts for the relatively clean typography compared to notes run off on local flatbed presses. Turró catalogues this as #761.
