Cantallops is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia, and like dozens of similarly minor councils during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coin shortages made small change functionally impossible to find. These hyperlocal emissions — collectively catalogued under the Turró series — were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's framework but produced by the individual ajuntaments themselves, often on whatever paper and printing equipment was locally available.
Survival rates for Cantallops issues are low simply because the town's population was tiny and the total print runs negligible.
