1 Peseta Caniles

Caniles is a small municipality in Granada province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper currency when central supply of coinage collapsed entirely after 1936. These local emergency notes — known collectively as "billetes locales" — were produced under wildly varying conditions, some typeset, some handwritten, nearly all with minimal anti-counterfeiting provision beyond a municipal stamp or seal.

The embossed seal here is the note's only security feature, pressed directly into the paper at the time of issue. At 55 × 41 mm, this is among the smallest format emissions from the Granada region, suggesting the town was working with whatever paper stock was immediately available rather than anything procured for the purpose.
