Calldetenes is a tiny municipality in Osona, Catalonia, with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the 1930s. This note is one of thousands of emergency fractional issues produced by Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican government's coin shortage — triggered by mass hoarding and the melting of silver — left small communities effectively without small change. Local councils were legally permitted, then tacitly encouraged, to fill the gap themselves.
The Turró catalogue remains the authoritative reference for these Catalan municipal emissions. Many issues from villages this small had print runs in the hundreds, and surviving examples in any condition are genuinely uncommon rather than merely scarce by convention.
