Cabanes is a small municipality in Castellón province, and like hundreds of other Valencian and Catalan towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican Spain's coin supply effectively collapsed under wartime hoarding and metal requisitions. These municipal emergency issues — known collectively as "billetes locales" — were produced in staggering variety between 1936 and 1939, often by local printers with no experience in currency production.
The official stamp is the primary anti-counterfeiting measure, which says much about the improvised nature of the whole enterprise. Gari Mon#378-B distinguishes this from at least one other known Cabanes variant.
