Opmerkingen

During the Spanish Civil War, the near-total disappearance of small-denomination coinage from circulation forced hundreds of Spanish municipalities and local commercial bodies to issue their own emergency paper. Burriana's Unión Mercantil — a local merchants' association in a town whose economy ran heavily on citrus export — produced this fractional note to keep retail trade moving when the Republic's central banking apparatus could not supply adequate change.

Printed locally by Imp. Alonso, the entire production run was essentially municipal in scope, redeemable only within the town. Few survived in any condition once the war ended and the Nationalist peseta was imposed.
