Botarell is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, population in the hundreds. During the Civil War, the Republican government's decree of September 1936 authorized Catalan municipalities to issue their own emergency currency — moneda local — to alleviate the near-total disappearance of metallic coin from circulation. Hundreds of ayuntamientos did exactly this, producing notes of wildly varying quality and design.

The Turró catalogue remains the authoritative reference for these emissions; Turró#519 places this issue within a well-documented but genuinely obscure corner of the series. Small-village emissions like Botarell's were printed in tiny quantities and circulated only within the immediate locality, which paradoxically makes survivors more common than one might expect — hoarding was instinctive when the issuing authority was your own town hall.
