Boix de Noguera is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, Catalonia, and this 1 pesseta note is among hundreds of emergency fractional currency pieces issued by Catalan and Aragonese local councils during the Spanish Civil War. The Republican government's chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage — exacerbated by hoarding and the disruption of normal mint output — forced municipalities down to the village level to print their own paper substitutes beginning in 1936.
Turró catalogues this issue under #473, placing it within a well-documented but enormous body of material. Survival is uneven; some village issues are genuinely rare, others turned up in bulk lots decades later.
