Bellmunt d'Urgell is a tiny municipality in the Lleida province — population in the hundreds — yet during the Spanish Civil War it issued its own paper currency like hundreds of other Catalan and Aragonese towns that found themselves cut off from the peseta supply as the Republican banking system buckled under wartime pressure. These local emergency emissions, collectively catalogued under the *Bitllets de la Guerra Civil*, were authorized by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1937 and typically printed by whatever commercial or cooperative press was nearest.
Imprenta Unió Obrera in Balaguer — a workers' collective print shop — handled production for several surrounding municipalities during this period, which gives notes from this cluster a family resemblance in typeface and layout.
