Beceite is a small Aragonese municipality that, like dozens of others, issued its own emergency paper currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government authorized local councils to print small-denomination notes to cover the chronic shortage of coin. The Consejo Municipal series from 1937 falls squarely within this wave of wartime necessity money — produced locally with minimal resources, circulating only within the immediate community, and redeemed (or simply abandoned) as the front shifted.
Aragon changed hands violently in 1938. Most surviving Beceite notes owe their existence to having been kept as curiosities rather than spent.
