Comments

During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-change coinage across Republican-held Catalonia prompted hundreds of local bodies — municipalities, trade unions, and collectivized enterprises — to issue their own fractional currency. Vicenç Ferrer was one such collectivized firm in Barcelona, authorized under the anarcho-syndicalist CNT-FAB collectivization decrees of late 1936. These emergency local issues were technically valid only within the issuing entity's own commercial sphere, though in practice they circulated more broadly out of sheer necessity.

The heavy card stock construction was deliberate — thicker substrate resisted the rapid wear that plagued thinner wartime paper in daily retail use.
