Opmerkingen

La Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima was Barcelona's largest heavy engineering firm — locomotives, boilers, warships — and by 1937 it was operating under worker control as part of the CNT-led collectivization of Catalan industry. This note was issued to pay its own workforce when the Republican monetary system had effectively broken down at street level, coins having vanished almost entirely from circulation through hoarding and wartime disruption.

Emergency factory scrip of this type is sometimes dismissed as purely local curiosity, but the dry seal and ink stamp combination here served a real anti-counterfeiting function: the stamps were applied individually, making bulk forgery impractical under wartime conditions.
