Barbens is a village in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Lleida with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred in the 1930s. That such a settlement issued its own emergency currency at all speaks directly to the chaos of the early Civil War months, when the Republican monetary system fragmented down to the municipal level and localities across Catalonia began printing their own moneda local simply to keep commerce moving.
Imprenta Popular in nearby Bellpuig produced notes for several surrounding municipalities during this period, which is why the printing quality across Turró-catalogued issues from this area tends to be consistent even when the issuing authorities were entirely different. The official stamp was the primary — often only — security measure distinguishing a valid note from a copy.
