Bages de Rodes — the municipality's name at the time — issued this note under the emergency local currency decree of June 1937, when the Generalitat de Catalunya authorized Catalan ajuntaments to print their own small-denomination paper to address the near-total disappearance of coinage from circulation. Republican Spain was hemorrhaging metal: copper, silver, and nickel were being hoarded, melted, or diverted to wartime production, leaving everyday retail transactions nearly impossible.

Turró catalogues over a thousand such municipal emissions. The Bages de Rodes issue is among the more obscure ones, from a small Alt Empordà municipality with a correspondingly small print run.
