Badajoz fell to Nationalist forces in August 1936 — one of the most violent episodes of the entire war — yet the Consejo Provincial continued issuing emergency paper well into 1937, a sign of how completely local Republican administrations were left to improvise their own monetary infrastructure as the central government's reach collapsed. These provincial emergency notes were authorised under the decree of July 1936 permitting local bodies to issue small-denomination paper to address the acute shortage of coin, which had been hoarded almost immediately after the coup.
Survival rate for Badajoz provincial issues is low. Much of the remaining stock would have been destroyed or abandoned as Nationalist control consolidated across Extremadura.
