Aracena, a small municipality in the Sierra de Huelva, fell within the Nationalist zone almost immediately after the July 1936 uprising. These locally issued emergency notes — billete de necesidad — filled a practical void caused by the hoarding and disappearance of Republican coinage from circulation. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities issued similar notes during 1936–37, each authority printing with whatever means were locally available, resulting in wide variation in paper quality and printing fidelity within the same series.
The Gari Montllor catalogue remains the principal reference for Spanish Civil War municipal issues; the 172A-A designation places this among the documented Aracena emissions, though survival rates for small-town necesidad notes are erratic.
