Almedina is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a catastrophic collapse of small-denomination coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — and hundreds of local councils, cooperatives, and committees issued their own emergency paper to fill the gap. This 1 Peseta is one of those municipal emissions, authorized under no central banking framework whatsoever, valid only within the bounds of the issuing locality.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: it resisted wear better than thin paper in hand-to-hand daily use at markets and local commerce. Most of these Castilian municipal pieces were redeemed or destroyed after the war, and small-town issues from Ciudad Real province survive in genuinely limited numbers.
