Alhama de Salmerón is a small municipality in the province of Guadalajara, and like hundreds of similarly isolated Spanish towns during the Civil War years, its municipal council was forced to issue its own emergency scrip when the collapse of normal banking channels made small-denomination coinage effectively disappear from circulation. These local issues — known collectively as "billetes de necesidad" — filled a vacuum that neither the Republican government nor the Nationalist zone could adequately address at the village level.
Papelería Lacoste in Almería produced notes for numerous municipalities across the region, which means the printing quality here is more consistent than many comparable issues run off on local presses with whatever materials were at hand.
