1 Peseta Alginet

Alginet is a small agricultural town in Valencia province, and this note was issued by the local joint committee of the CNT and UGT — the anarcho-syndicalist and socialist trade union federations — during the period when much of the Republican rear guard was effectively self-administered by workers' organizations. The Generalitat Valenciana had authorized municipalities and collectives to issue emergency fractional currency to address the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage that plagued the Republican zone from 1936 onward.

Local Republican scrip of this type was printed in small runs, often on whatever stock was available, and redemption was rarely guaranteed once the issuing body dissolved or the military front shifted. Survival rates vary sharply even within a single series.
