During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of fractional coinage as hoarding and disruption collapsed small-change circulation almost entirely. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities responded by issuing their own emergency paper — these locally produced notes are catalogued collectively under the term "moneda de paper local." Alforja, a small village in the Camp de Tarragona with a population well under a thousand, was among them. Three signatures were required for validity: the mayor, the economics councillor, and the treasurer — a degree of bureaucratic formality that speaks to how seriously even tiny administrations took the legitimacy of their improvised currency.
Imprenta de Ferrando operated out of nearby Reus, the regional printing hub for much of this Tarragona-area emergency paper.
