Comments

Alfara dels Ports is a tiny municipality in the Ports massif of Tarragona province, and like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian towns during the Civil War, it resorted to issuing its own emergency fractional currency when Republican coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply stopped. The Generalitat de Catalunya had sanctioned local issues but exercised almost no quality control, which is why the output varied so wildly between municipalities.

S. G. de P. (E. C.) — Sociedad General de Publicaciones, Editorial Catalana — was one of the Barcelona commercial printers absorbing this flood of municipal commissions in 1937, producing notes for dozens of towns simultaneously from their Borrell premises.
