Alcaudete is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia. Like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 after Republican-zone silver and small copper coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply stranded on the wrong side of rapidly shifting front lines. These ayuntamiento-issued notes were technically provisional, tied to no formal banking authority, and backed by nothing more than the issuing municipality's word and whatever local commerce would accept them at face value.
Jaén province remained under Republican control through most of the conflict, which allowed these notes to circulate with some degree of normalcy until the Nationalist advance in 1939 rendered the entire emission worthless overnight.
