Alcanar is a small coastal municipality in southern Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the Republic's coin supply collapsed under wartime pressure. These municipal emissions — known collectively as moneda local or paper de guerra — were authorized under desperate circumstances and typically printed in tiny quantities by local print shops with whatever materials were at hand.
Turró catalogues this emission as #73, placing it within the broader documented series of Catalan wartime paper. Survival rates for Alcanar issues are low; small-town emissions rarely circulated beyond the municipality and were often discarded or destroyed after Franco's forces consolidated control of the region in early 1938.
