Alcalá de Chivert is a small municipality in Castellón province, and like hundreds of Valencian and Catalan towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued its own emergency paper when coin circulation collapsed entirely after 1936. The Republican government officially discouraged hoarding but never solved the small-change shortage, leaving local authorities to fill the gap with whatever printing resources they had available.
The Gari Mon catalogue distinguishes a B variant for this denomination, most likely a paper or color difference from the primary type. At this size and weight, the note was almost certainly produced locally — purpose-built printing was rarely available to municipalities at this level.
