Alcahalí is a small inland village in the Marina Alta comarca of Valencia, and like hundreds of other Republican municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the central supply of small change collapsed in 1936–37. These local emissions — often called "billetes municipales" or simply "vales" — filled a genuine transactional void: coins had vanished from circulation almost entirely, hoarded or melted, and the Republican government's own fractional notes couldn't reach every village fast enough.
Gari Mon #71-C places this within the documented Alcahalí series. Survival rates for these hyper-local issues vary wildly; many were redeemed and pulped once the crisis passed, others simply worn to illegibility.
