Albons is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Girona, and this note is one of thousands of emergency local issues that flooded Catalonia and the rest of Republican Spain after the military uprising of July 1936 disrupted normal coin supply. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized municipal councils to issue their own provisional currency — moneda local — to keep commerce moving when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost overnight through hoarding.
Turró's catalog remains the definitive reference for these Catalan municipals, and Albons sits near the thinner end of the documentation spectrum. The official stamp constitutes the only security measure, which was entirely typical for a council of this size and administrative capacity.
