Albatàrrec is a small municipality in Lleida, Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar villages during the Spanish Civil War, it briefly assumed monetary authority by issuing its own emergency scrip. The collective "Adelante" — a CNT-aligned agricultural workers' organization — was among the thousands of anarcho-syndicalist bodies that filled the vacuum left when Republican Spain's small-denomination coinage disappeared into hoarding almost immediately after July 1936.
These hyper-local issues were never intended to travel far. Redemption was contingent on the collective's survival, which ended with the Nationalist advance through Catalonia in early 1939.
