Albacete's Consejo Municipal issued this note as emergency local currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage left municipalities scrambling to keep markets functional. Hundreds of Spanish town councils did the same between 1936 and 1939, each producing its own improvised scrip — the result is a chaotic, fascinating body of material that the Gari Montalvo catalogue attempts to organize by locality and type.
The Almansa connection is worth noting: printed outside Albacete itself, which was common when local print capacity was limited or already committed to other wartime demands. The embossed seal was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure — modest, but adequate given the hyper-local circulation these notes were designed for.
