Aigüestoses del Llobregat — known today as Castellnou de Bages — was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities forced to produce their own fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government failed to maintain an adequate supply of small-denomination coinage. These local emissions, collectively catalogued under the Turró system, were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's emergency provisions of 1936–37.
At 55 × 44 mm, this is among the smallest formats in the entire municipal series — a practical response to paper scarcity as much as anything else. The issuing authority almost certainly had no access to a professional printer.
