Agullana is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Girona, just a few kilometers from the French border. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republic's central monetary authority effectively lost control of small-denomination coinage, and hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including Agullana — issued their own emergency paper and cardboard fractional currency to keep local commerce moving. These municipal issues, catalogued extensively by Turró, were strictly local instruments: legally usable only within the issuing municipality and theoretically redeemable once the crisis passed.
Agullana's proximity to the border gave it particular significance in early 1939, when it became one of the last Republican-held towns before the mass exodus into France. Most locally-held currency from such border municipalities was abandoned or lost during the retreat.
