Aguilar de Segarra is a tiny municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia — population historically well under a thousand — and like hundreds of similarly small Catalan and Spanish Republican localities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the withdrawal and hoarding of metal coinage created a near-total breakdown of small-change transactions. The printer, El Secretariat Català in Barcelona, handled a substantial volume of these municipal emissions across Catalonia in 1937, producing notes for communities that had no realistic independent means of printing.
