Adzaneta de Albaida is a small municipality in the Valencia region, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency paper currency in 1937 when the Republic's central supply of small change — silver and bronze coinage in particular — had effectively collapsed through hoarding and melting. These local emissions, known collectively as billetes de necesidad, were produced under improvised conditions with whatever printing resources the local council could access.
The Turró and Gari catalogues document thousands of such issues; this one is among the more obscure, with survival rates reflecting the note's purely local circulation and the disruption that followed the Nationalist takeover of the region in 1939.
