Comments

Spain's postwar peseta issues from the early 1950s were produced entirely domestically — the FNMT had been printing Banco de España notes since the Civil War period, and by 1953 the operation was fully self-sufficient, a deliberate policy of the Franco regime that extended to currency production as much as anything else. The 1 peseta denomination at this size occupied an awkward monetary position: too small to matter much economically, yet retained in the series for small-change transactions at a moment when coin shortages made low-value paper still necessary.

Pick 144 is among the more common survivors of the series, frequently found in circulated grades but less often encountered with intact serial number clarity due to the lightweight paper stock used.
